WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MANCHESTER CITY LOGO?
The club’s crest, which is featured on all of Manchester City’s shirts, came into being at the end of 2015 after a lengthy consultation with fans. Explaining that “the fans have spoken and the club has listened” in the official press release of the presentation of the new identity, the English club was indeed pleased to have solicited all the fans of the club, those who are the pillars of the Manchester City entity.
In addition to knowing if they wanted a new crest, fans were also invited to give their wishes on what the new logo should be. In form and content. Thus, many of them asked for the return of a round coat of arms. A historical geometry for the Citizens since only the period 1997-2016 gave place to a logo out of a round shape. For the rest, fans had asked for the presence of different elements:
- The Manchester boat. This has been present in the past and symbolizes the city’s commercial links and its position as an international crossroads.
- The three rivers (Irwell, Medlock, Irk). A central feature of the city and featured on the Manchester city coat of arms.
- The red rose. Also present on the original Manchester coat of arms, it symbolizes the historical link with Lancashire.

These elements are not the only ones that make up the Manchester City crest, as they are visible in the heart of the logo unveiled in 2015, which looks very similar to the one from the 72-97 period. Indeed, the date 1894 symbolizes the year in which the modest club renamed Ardwick A.F.C. changed its status and name to become the Manchester City FC we know today.
Around this date, the name of the club is also shown, but in a different way from previous logos, with the word ‘Manchester’ at the top to remind us of the attachment to the city and the word ‘City’ at the bottom.
